Renting farm equipment is especially attractive to small-scale farmers who may not be able to qualify for a loan to purchase needed equipment. And even if they do qualify, the cost to rent the equipment is typically less expensive than a monthly loan payment that will be on the books for years.

Large-scale operations are also choosing the rent option as it allows them to get access to the equipment when needed, without having to maintain it on a long-term basis and eventually replace it. Commonly-Used Equipment in the Agricultural Sector
Let’s take a look at some of the more commonly used pieces of heavy equipment and machinery essential to running today’s farms and ranches.

Water trucks supply water to crops, especially during droughts. They are designed to get water out of the truck and onto the crops with maximum speed and efficiency. Water trucks are also used to hydrate livestock, reduce waste by using only the water that’s needed, and reduce the use of groundwater that may be in short supply.

Forklifts are an absolute necessity when it comes to lifting and moving heavy and cumbersome items such as hay, straw bales, and troughs. They are used in both indoor and outdoor operations, including over rough terrain. With a much higher reach than a tractor loader, forklifts can hoist anywhere from 3,000 to 50,000 pounds. Factors such as space and the ground where they will be used, how much the load weighs, and the materials being transported will determine the type of forklift needed for the job.

Mini and standard excavators perform a wide variety of tasks, including clearing land for crops, digging holes for fence posts, creating roads, removing tree stumps, removing accumulated snow, general landscaping, and digging trenches for better water management. The type of job required will determine whether a mini or standard excavator is needed.

Tractors are one of the most ubiquitous pieces of machinery found on farms and ranches today. In addition to pulling other types of agricultural equipment, farmers rely on tractors to clear heavy brush, rocks, and other debris from the land; to plow, harrow, and sow fields with the application of certain attachments; and as transportation during flooding and heavy snows when roads are impassable.

Balers compress crops such as straw, hay, cotton, and alfalfa into compact bales, making them easy to use, transport, and store. These machines can produce bales of varying shapes and sizes; the round bale being the most common type found in the agriculture industry. Balers are also designed to retain the nutritional content of the crop being compressed so that it can be used to feed livestock.

Combines are used to harvest, thresh, and clean grain crops. They were originally designed to harvest wheat but are now used to harvest a wide range of grains. Before their advent, workers toiled for long hours to do by hand what combines are capable of accomplishing on a much wider scale in a fraction of the time. Separating the wheat from the chaff can now be accomplished simply by driving a combine over a field of grain.

Field cultivators prepare the soil for planting, mixing loose soil and stirring in fertilizer or compost. They are not designed for breaking ground or loosening hard soil, a job better suited to tillers. Cultivators also maintain soil quality while crops are growing by controlling the growth of weeds. They can be either gas powered or electric, with or without cords.
